Well the weather is starting to heat up and this month will see the start of the crabbing season. As a rule of "R" in them. We have just received a shipment of witches hats (dillies) and round folding crab traps so if you need a new supply for summer come in and get a great price. We also stock wire pots that are made for us in Brisbane and these are popular for the person who wants to leave the crab pot out over night.
There have been quite a lot of Mangrove Jacks already being caught at the Cascade Gardens at Broadbeach so we should be getting a lot caught here soon too. Last year was a great year for this species in the Tweed. These fish prefer live baits or lures and can bust up even heavy line in a second. Target the Tweed bridges and any places in the river that offer a cover for these fish to hide eg branches overhanging, rocks, mangroves, any submerged hiding places. Cast your bait or lures as close as possible and move the lures to entice the fish out, they will usually attack the lure/bait and head straight back to their hidey hole so you will have to hold them otherwise they will usually manage to break you off.
Still a lot of bream around - we have a surefire new blade lure that comes highly reccommended from our friends at Illuka who have been having a very successful run with these lures.
About a week ago we were starting to get reports of large whiting around Oxley Cove - a good start to the summer season. Lets just hope that we don't get the strong winds and the boaties will be able to get offshore. Dont forget there are a lot of Charter boats available from the Tweed and these guys are experienced fishing offshore so it is worth your while to take a trip or two just to get an idea of the reefs and bar if you are new to the area and plan on taking your own boat offshore. Or if on holidays and wanting a good day out ring any of the Charter boats. If you want to hire a boat and fish the Tweed River that is easy too and you don't need a boat licence or a fishing licence if you hire or charter.
Hope to see you in the shop this summer.
