Well we have certainly had enough rain, but the river is looking terrific and there are lots of fish to be had. Good catches of flathead and bream and late may will be the start of the larger sea bream in the river. Also May is the "start" of the luderwick season. These fish are caught all year around but are in larger numbers in the colder months. Usually we start to get good supplies of weed sent up from Yamba as the demand increases. Hopefully the rain will not be heavy during this time and the weed will not get washed away.
Come in and we can give you a few tips that will be helpful catching these fish. They are good eating but only if you fillet them straight away because if you leave them the weed tasted goes right through the flesh and they are horrible. This is the reason you will see all the luderwick fishermen with catch nets, so they can keep the fish alive until they are ready to leave. Also you will need a good landing net as you will be using very small hooks #10, #12 and it is hard to lift a large luderwick over the rocks or into the boat without the hook dropping out. We can let you in on the most popular hooks, line , floats etc.
Offshore this month they have been catching large numbers of mackerel off Palm Beach Reef and some large tailor off Pottsville and Brunswick. There is a nice hole at Bilinga (North Kirra) just about in front of the Surf Life Saving club.
Don't forget we have the takeaway section open so you can get a Bacon and Egg Roll and cup of delicious coffee to start you off, and order sandwiches to take on you fishing trip.
